Sir Ernest Gowers

A senior British civil servant, Sir Ernest Gowers was the author of both Plain words (1948) and The ABC of plain words (1951). These two works he later combined and revised as The complete plain words (1954). He went on to revise H. W. Fowler's evergreen work Modern English usage (1965).
